A 36‑year‑old man from Portstewart was sentenced to six months in custody after pleading guilty to two assault charges on June 11. He was identified as Ciaran Patrick McKenna, aged 36, from Coleraine Road in Portstewart.
Ciaran Patrick McKenna admitted attacking a security guard at the Northern Ireland Housing Executive in Waterloo Place. He also punched a doctor while being treated at Altnagelvin Hospital, and CCTV footage captured the assaults, leading to his arrest.
District Judge Ted Magill noted McKenna’s 26 previous convictions and said there was far too much antisocial behaviour and abuse directed at health‑care staff. The defence argued that McKenna had pleaded guilty at the first opportunity and claimed he had ‘come off worst’ after the guard’s self‑defence.
