Republicans in New Hampshire suffered significant losses in the 2026 midterms, with multiple incumbent defeats in traditionally GOP strongholds.

House Speaker Sherman Packard and Rep Ross Berry were unseated, and the GOP Senate seat in the Lakes Region flipped to a Democrat. These losses occurred alongside defeats in Bedford and other down‑ballot races.

Governor Kelly Ayotte secured re-election, though her margin was modest and voters often split tickets between her and Republican legislative candidates. Her win stood out as the sole major Republican victory in the state.

Democrats exceeded expectations, projected to hold a 290‑plus majority in the 400‑member House and a 15‑seat majority in the 24‑seat Senate. The results represent the strongest Democratic showing in years and bring them close to veto‑proof majorities in both chambers.

Key victories included six new Democratic seats in Londonderry and Bedford, the defeat of long‑time Republican Tim Lang in the 2nd Senate District, and wins on the Executive Council. Democrats also reclaimed Manchester and Nashua, flipping the state’s largest cities.

Analysts attribute the wave to a national mood against the Republican Party rather than local issues, noting that many down‑ballot candidates lacked name recognition and funding. Consequently, voters punished any candidate with an ‘R’ label, regardless of the office.

Overall, the election marks a historic shift with Democrats poised to control both legislative chambers and the Executive Council, while Republicans retained the governor’s office.
